Great Horned Owls are the most widespread and familiar owls
in the Western Hemisphere ranging from subarctic North America, south through South America to Tierra del Fuego. In
southeast Arizona, they range from the desert lowlands to the high mountains. Breeding begins in the winter. This
owl is quite versatile in nest site selection; utilizing old raven or hawk nests, deserted structures, and cavities;
wherever there is suitable protection. As with many owls, the Great Horned hunts primarily at night, from perched
locations, using excellent low-light binocular vision and directional auditory senses. The favored prey is medium
sized mammals (rabbits), however nearly any creature smaller than a medium sized dog could be on the menu. When not
harassed, Great Horned Owls are rather tolerant of humans, often roosting in suburban settings. | |
